10.1.1.1 Router Login

10.1.1.1 is Australia’s gateway address. Telstra has used it on the Gateway Max, Gateway Frontier and every Smart Modem generation, TPG uses it on most of its supplied routers, and iiNet, Internode and some Optus and Vodafone NBN installations follow the same convention. Like 10.0.0.1 in the United States, it comes from the 10.0.0.0/8 range, so customers moving from a consumer router on 192.168.1.1 often cannot find it. The admin password on Telstra units is either the word Telstra or a code printed on the label, depending on the generation.

Factory credentials by brand. Where a device prints a unique password on its label, that label overrides anything listed here. If a default fails, the password has been changed and a factory reset restores it.

How to log in at 10.1.1.1

  1. Connect to the gateway’s network. Join its Wi-Fi or plug in with an Ethernet cable. Mobile data, a VPN, or a different router’s Wi-Fi will not reach 10.1.1.1.
  2. Type the address in the URL bar. Enter http://10.1.1.1 exactly, in the address bar at the top of the browser, not in a search box. Some devices also answer to a hostname such as mymodem.modem, telstra.gateway.
  3. Accept a certificate warning if one appears. Routers that use HTTPS on the local network present a self-signed certificate. On your own router the warning is expected; choose Advanced and proceed.
  4. Sign in. Use the credentials from the table above or from the label on the gateway. Usernames are case-sensitive on some firmware.
  5. Change the admin password. Do this before anything else. Default credentials are public, and remote management, if enabled, exposes the login to the internet.

Common mistypes of 10.1.1.1

None of these open anything. Each is a slip that sends people to a search page or a timeout instead of the admin panel.

10.1.1.1 will not open: what to check

Wrong gateway. The most common cause by far. Read the Default Gateway from your device: ipconfig on Windows, Wi-Fi details on macOS, iPhone and Android, or ip route on Linux. If it is not 10.1.1.1, that is the address to use. If the ISP unit is in bridge mode behind your own router, its page is not reachable from your network; connect a computer directly to it.

Typed into search. A page of search results means the address went to a search engine. Click the address bar, clear it, and type the IP again. Adding http:// in front forces the browser to treat it as an address.

HTTPS forced. Some browsers upgrade to https:// automatically and the router does not answer there. Type http:// explicitly.

VPN or private DNS. A VPN routes everything away from the local network; secure DNS in the browser can break router hostnames. Turn both off while you log in.

169.254.x.x address. If your device shows an address starting 169.254, it never received one from the router. Restart both devices, and check the cable or Wi-Fi connection.

Forgotten password. Defaults failing means someone changed the password. Hold the reset button for about ten seconds to return the unit to factory settings, which also erases its configuration and Wi-Fi name.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Telstra modem password for 10.1.1.1?
On Gateway Max, Gateway Frontier and Smart Modem Gen 1 it is admin / Telstra. On Smart Modem Gen 2 and Gen 3 it is admin with the password printed on the label. The Telstra app can also change Wi-Fi settings without the page.
Is 10.1.1.1 the same as 10.0.0.1?
No. They are different addresses in different subnets of the 10.0.0.0/8 range. Australian ISPs use 10.1.1.1; Xfinity and Comcast in the US use 10.0.0.1.
Why does 10.1.1.1 not open on my TPG router?
Some TPG-supplied routers use 192.168.1.1 instead, especially TP-Link Archer VR units. Check the label, or read the Default Gateway from your device’s network settings.
Can I put a Telstra Smart Modem in bridge mode at 10.1.1.1?
The Smart Modem does not offer a true bridge mode. You can disable its Wi-Fi and set a DMZ to your own router, which is the usual workaround, or use your own modem-router on NBN connections that allow it.
